With a murderous beast on her heels and a conniving daemon who wants to use her for his own means, Tora Hayden’s main objective is to keep herself and those she cares about alive.

After meeting an enigmatic businessman who possibly suffers from florid psychosis, Tora is propelled into the world of the supernatural. She’s forced to believe the mythical world exists when she’s brutally attacked by a savage fiend intent on annihilating her family line for reasons unbeknownst to her. With the assistance of the psychotic businessman, along with a gorgeous manwhore whom Tora swore to never date but ends up doing just that, she discovers her seventy-years-dead great-grandmother was actually an otherworldly warrioress.

In an effort to beat the murderous beast at its own game, Tora chooses to take on her deceased great-grandmother’s powers to gain immortality and supernatural strength.

During the transfer of powers, something goes wrong: she unwittingly releases a daemon who’s been cursed to his own realm for enslaving the fiend and working towards enslaving all factions. Now, she not only has a murderous beast on her heels but a conniving daemon who’s loose and wants to use her for his own means.

Shorts Update… And No, I’m Not Using Any Body Parts

For those of you in the know, I’m working on a short story about a witch who doesn’t heed the Rule of Three and learns too late–never do a curse when extremely pissed.

I’ve never written a short before. Sure, I’ve done essays in school and college, but an actual short story? Nope.

For the past two weeks, I’ve had a lot of family stuff going on and haven’t really had a chance to get going with it. I’d thought it about it here and there but hadn’t planned anything out nor even wrote anything down. But tonight? I actually started planning and researching…then I got immersed in my research for a few hours. I was looking for a revenge curse and finally came to the realization I’m going to have to write my own.

That’s a little scary, ya know? Even though it’s a fiction story, I’ve decided not to use any chicken hearts or eye of newt or toe of frog or left big toe of a magician, just in case someone, somewhere, actually tries to use my curse. Gah.

On the other hand, it’s got to be real. Even though I write fiction, I want a sense of realism in my writing. Fun fact: I actually am a witch (found out last summer after weird shit started happening), so the curse will be an actual curse…not that I would ever curse someone (though I won’t say never), mainly because the Rule of Three scares the hell out of me. Apparently it doesn’t scare my character though, or she just doesn’t give a rat’s ass at the time, but in the end she regrets doing the curse to begin with.

Hmm…a rat’s ass…now there’s a thought. 🙂

Beta Readers Needed!

Finally!
After working on this baby for over three years, I’m finally to the point of needing beta readers! I’m looking for 4-5 people who have a critical eye and are willing to not only start but finish the book and give me feedback, which I need by Feb. 1.

My WIP is new adult urban fantasy, set in Chicago. There are some horror aspects to it, some serious parts, and some lighthearted parts as well. Also, there are sex scenes!!

If you’re familiar with Chicago, all the better, although a lot of my places are fictional. It’s 379 pages and 117,312 words. So, yes, it’s kinda long, which is why I’m giving a month to finish. I’m looking to send this out to agents rather than self-publish.

If you’re interested, please email me at t_kerrigan@comcast.net and include whether or not you’ve beta read before, and if so, your method of beta reading.

Thanks!

EVER AFTER BY KIM HARRISON

Recently Kim’s latest book in the Hollow’s universe came out, so naturally I had to get it. Ever After is Book 11 in what will be a series of 13.

ever afterThe ever after, the demonic realm that parallels the human world, is shrinking. If it disappears completely, so does all magic. It’s up to witch-turned-daywalking-demon Rachel Morgan to avert catastrophe and keep life from changing… for the worse.

While saving the world is important, it isn’t Rachel’s only motivation. There’s also the small fact that she caused the ley line to rip in the first place, setting off a chain reaction of unfortunate events. That little mistake has made her life forfeit unless she can fix it. It’s also made her more than a few enemies, including the most powerful demon in the ever after—a terrifying entity who eats souls and now has an insatiable appetite for her. He’s already kidnapped her friend and goddaughter to lure her out, and if Rachel doesn’t give herself up soon, they’ll die.

But Rachel has more than a few impressive and frightening skills of her own, and she isn’t going to hand over her soul and her life without one hell of a fight. She’s also got a surprise: elven tycoon Trent Kalamack. With this unlikely ally beside her—a prospect both thrilling and unnerving—she’s going to return to the ever after, kick some demon butt, rescue her loved ones… and prevent an apocalypse before it’s too late. Or, at least that’s the plan…

This book has a darker tone but does have some uplifting and funny moments.  Ivy doesn’t play a big role in this book since Rachel doesn’t really need her anymore, other than to ground her, although she does get that from someone else. (Hmmmm…wonder who?)

Trent shows a different side in this book and that he’s not willing to sacrifice everything to save the world. Also, his feelings for Rachel become known to her, especially at the end.  Nick does make an appearance and somehow makes you hate him even more. He does seem to find a fitting end, however.

Al unwittingly gives Rachel glimpses into his past and someone who was once important to him. She even gets to see what the Ever After and the demons used to look like.

Ellasbeth is back and her usual bitchy self. Felix gives Rachel even more of a reason to save the vampires’ souls. The demons come to respect Rachel and even Trent to some degree.

Ever After is action-packed and hard to put down. The last chapter ties it all together–achingly bittersweet, sad, comical, and hot, all rolled into one.

ONTO DRAFT NUMBER…CRAP. I DON’T KNOW.

The holidays are behind us.  Thing 1 left for school yesterday–didn’t get there until about 1:30 in the morning and had classes at 8 a.m.  I guess he’s young and can do that.  Me? No.

Now that things are going back to normal for us, I can focus on my WIP. Guess what? I’m rewriting…again.

I don’t even know what draft number this is. I lost count a while ago.

Last month I heard back from the editor who had requested a partial. While he liked it, he said it wasn’t for him and he had suggestions for making it better. The suggestions he mentioned were actually things I’d thought about doing, but rather than going by my gut I’d listened to what others said. In essence, I’ve learned to trust my gut more.

Currently though, my head and my gut have been warring with each other. My head is telling me to move book one forward more into book 2 whereas my gut is telling me to keep it as it is and make a few changes. I hadn’t done any writing in the last month because I wasn’t sure what to do. I finally decided to go with my gut, and last night I dreamt chapter 1, so I’m going with it. Basically, chapter 3 becomes 1 and the beginning moves a lot faster. I like it better this way, and now that my head and my gut are in agreement, we can all move forward.
